Sens Lose 7-5 to the Red Wings

Check out the highlights

What a game?!?!  From the get go, this contest was crazy!  Goals aplenty and consistent offensive pressure on both ends.  What was missing?  Goaltending & Defensive Play.  But that was just fine with anyone watching the game… was a barnburner until the very end.

Sens went up early, only to have the Wings take the lead.  Then, the Sens retook the lead, with the Wings responding with 2 goals, 13 seconds apart, to retake the lead again.  That would make it 4-3 Wings midway through the second period and Cory Clouston decided to pull Robin Lehner in favour of Brian Elliott.  INSTANT SPARK!  As Milan Michalek tied the game up once again and they went into the third tied at 4.

The back and forth continued.  Mike Fisher had drawn a tripping penalty late in the second and 30 seconds into the third ,Johan Franzen completed his hat trick on the PP and the Wings went up 5-4.  Alex Kovalev would respond with a wicked wrister, his 2nd of the game, and the game was once again tied.  Then, after Chris Phillips was called for cross-checking while killing a penalty, the Wings went on a 5 on 3.  Johan Franzen wasn’t satisfied with 3, and scored his 4th goal, putting the Wings up 6-5.  More controversy, as the Sens looked to have a goal when Chris Neil crashed the net and put the puck in after digging it loose from under Howard.  The refs ruled no goal, saying the the goaltender was pushed into the net with the puck underneath him and the Wings continued to lead.

As the saying goes, it was not to be for the Senators this evening, as just for good measure, Johan Franzen scored his 5th goal into an empty net, the first 5 goal game since Marian Gaborik did it in December of 2007, and the Wings would sneak out a 7-5 win.

Many eventful happenings in this one.  Johan Franzen’s 5 goals aside, Alex Kovalev scored twice while Peter Regin finally tallied his second goal of the season.  Chris Campoli had his first 3 point game of his career and was one of 3 Sens to have 3 point nights (Kovalev & Regin).  Henrik Zetterberg added 3 assists in the win.
