Sens Win 2-1 Over Devils

Check out the highlights

Whenever these 2 teams play, you can always expect a defensive, low scoring game.  Some would call these games “snoozers” while others would call them just plain boring.  Nevertheless, the game was played and lived up to expectations.  At least early on.  The first period had the Sens outshooting the Devils 8-7, with neither team really threatening to put one in the net.

In the second, the Sens finally struck.  Ryan Shannon would outrace 3 Devils to the puck to beat out an icing call and would find Erik Condra, who would bat in his own rebound and give the Senators a 1-0 lead.  Ottawa would then get themselves in some penalty trouble, giving the Devils 2, 5 on 3 opportunities.  Fortunately for them, Jason Spezza and Craig Anderson were up to the task, winning key faceoffs, making key saves and preventing the Devils from evening the score.

The Senators couldn’t hold off the Devils forever however.  At 4:01 of the third period, Patrik Elias snuck in behind Ottawa’s defensive coverage and converted a Brian Rolston pass from behind the net to tie the game at 1.  But these new Ottawa Senators don’t seem to quit. With under 3 minutes left, Jason Spezza was given a ton of time to send a pass to the front of the Devils net that Erik Condra would put by Marty Brodeur, giving the Sens a 2-1 victory over the red hot Devils.

Jason Spezza was Mr. Everything during this matchup.  He killed penalties, won faceoffs and had the game-winning assist over 20:45 of ice-time.  Erik Condra demonstrated why Cory Clouston deemed him a “hockey player,” showing a nose for the net and a strong work ethic.  Craig Anderson was solid again, this time with Senator colours on his mask.

The game went exactly the way most people thought it would.  A 2-1 final after a tight, closely-contested game.  It’s just a bit surprising that it was the Senators who came away with the victory, especially with the run the Devils have been on.  Definitely a testament to this new group of Senator players.
