Senators Lose 4-2 to Maple Leafs

Check out the highlights

The Maple Leafs HAD to win this game in order to stay in the playoff race.  A loss to the Senators and the miracle run the Leafs have had over the past month would be over.  Think the Senators knew it?  You bet they did.

But it didn’t matter.  The Leafs seemed to be dominating play over the first two periods.  While the shots were close, the efforts were not, as Toronto was consistently working in Ottawa’s end.  Phil Kessel opened the scoring in the first when he blew by Filip Kuba, twisting him right around in his skates, and whacked in his own rebound for his 30th of the season.  Nazem Kadri would make it 2-0 when he intercepted a Craig Anderson clearing attempt and banked it in off Anderson’s skate.  The Maple Leafs were ahead and Leaf nation was feeling good.

Jason Spezza had something to say, well, do I guess.  With 55 seconds left in the 2nd, Spezza was sent in alone on Reimer, beating him glove side, to cut the lead to 1.  Then, on a PP in the third, Spezza scored his 19th and second of the game to tie the game at 2.  Spezza now has recorded 16 points in his last 12 games.

The tie would only last for 2:39 as Tyler Bozak would get credit for a PP goal when a Joffrey Lupul shot deflected off his skate and in.  Nikolai Kulemin would add the insurance with 1:20 left and the Leafs would get the much-needed victory.  Leaf fans must have been worried when the Senators tied it up, but the Buds came through and live to see another day in the chase for a playoff spot.

Here’s Ron Wilson, Dion Phaneuf, James Reimer, Phil Kessel & Tyler Bozak on the important win.

Once Spezza scored late in the second, the Senators seemed to find a groove.  Overall, the team played alright and gave the Maple Leafs quite the scare when they tied the game.  Here’s the Senators’ reaction to the loss.
