Senators Re-sign Smith & Greening

The Ottawa Senators announced the signing of forward Zack Smith to a 2-year, 1-way contract on Thursday.  Smith recorded 4 goals & 5 assists in a career-high 55 games with the Senators during the 2010-11 campaign.  Smith also totalled 120 penalty minutes, the 4th highest total amongst NHL rookies this past season.  Smith was Ottawa’s 3rd round selection in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

My take:  Signing both Smith and Greening to 1-way contracts indicates that management liked what both these players brought to the table during the final games of the 2010-11 season and feel they are ready for a full-time role on the team.  Greening spent most of the last month playing with Jason Spezza, using his size in front of the net and his speed to race past defenders.  He is an extremely intelligent player and one that will only get better.  Smith was an agitator and frequently defended his teammates, sometimes at the cost of momentum.  There was a stretch where it seemed like Smith was spending more time in the penalty box than on the ice.  He does know his role however, and if he’s able to contribute a little bit more offensively this season, he’ll be a perfect fit on the 3rd line.  As you can tell, I like these signings a lot.
