Senators’ Rookies Defeat Blackhawks’ Rookies 6-5

The Ottawa Senators prospects played their second game of the rookie tournament Sunday afternoon, defeating the Blackhawks’ squad 6-5.  Stephane Da Costa was one of the offensive stars for the Sens, scoring a natural hat-trick in the 2nd period with a nice dangle and a couple of hard slapshots.  Mika Zibanejad & Andre Petersson had 3 points each, while Corey Cowick added his 3rd goal of the tourney with a shorthanded effort.  Goaltender Matej Machkovksy didn’t look particularly strong, constantly flailing about his crease and struggling to contain his rebounds.  The defence in front of him was inconsistent as well, breaking down at times that resulted in a couple of late-period goals.  Despite their defensive failures, the Senators were able to prevail and move to 2-0 in the tournament.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau played his first game of the tourney after sitting out yesterday. Darren Kramer was a healthy scratch.
