Senators Lose 5-3 to Bruins

The Ottawa Senators strolled into Boston Tuesday night with a 6-game winning streak and sitting 4th in the Conference.  Meanwhile, the defending Stanley Cup champions sat dead last in the Eastern Conference with a measly 6 points in 10 games.  Exactly the opposite of where most thought each team would be at this point in the season.  Tim Thomas got the start for the Bruins and the well-renowned Sens killer brought a career record of 18-8-2, 1.91 GAA, .938 SP and 6 shutouts against Ottawa to hopefully help turn the tables in favour of Boston.   

But none of that mattered to Nick Foligno.  Foligno opened the scoring when his backhand from in front rebounded off Tim Thomas, and then ricocheted off a Bruins defenceman into the net to make it 1-0.  After a Milan Lucic PP goal tied the game, Foligno found the puck on his stick in front of the Bruins net once again.  This time, he elected to slyly backpass it to Stephane Da Costa, who quickly scored his 3rd of the season and the Sens were back on top. 

Onto the second, where the Bruins came out pressing.  At 4:21, the pressure paid off as Patrice Bergeron took a pass from Tyler Seguin and snapped it by the Senators goaltender to tie the game at 2.  Then, after getting multiple chances on Craig Anderson throughout the period, the Bruins were able to take the lead when Chris Kelly one-timed a Rich Peverley pass through a ton of traffic.  It was the Bruins’ 16th shot of the frame.  

The third period is where the Senators have shone this season and this one was no different early.  Ottawa tied the game at the 5:04 mark when Jared Cowen’s shot from the point deflected off a defender’s stick and bounced past Thomas to notch the game at 3.  It was Jared Cowen’s first NHL goal.  But unlike the past couple of weeks, the opposition took charge quickly thereafter.  Johnny Boychuk and Daniel Paille scored 37 seconds apart and the Bruins, who played like a team desperate for a win all night long, went on to defeat the Senators 5-3, ending Ottawa’s 6 game winning streak.

13 different players registered a point for the Bruins with former Senators Chris Kelly & Zdeno Chara tallying 2 points a piece.  Tim Thomas made 23 saves and recorded yet another career win against Ottawa. Nick Foligno had a goal and 2 assists in the failed effort, the Senator’s first loss since Oct 18 against the Flyers.
