What a difference a day makes.  A night after the Buffalo Sabres handed the Ottawa Senators their 5th straight loss, the squad was able to put together a successful effort and defeat their long time rivals.  It didn’t look good early though.  The first period saw the Sens get outshot 8-4, while giving up the first goal of the game when Tyler Bozak snapped one by Craig Anderson from just inside the blue line.

But the second period was a different story.  First, a gratuitous bounce off Kaspars Daugavins’ skate went right to a wide open Sergei Gonchar, who scored his 2nd goal of the season to tie the game at 1.  Then, while on a power-play, Nick Foligno took a high stick to the face from Phillippe Dupuis to give the Sens a 5 on 3 power-play.  Just before it ended, Foligno jumped over the boards, took a breakaway pass from Erik Karlsson and snuck one by Scrivens to put the Sens ahead.

48 seconds into the third, Ottawa would strike again.  Zack Smith took a rebound off Anderson and skated all the way down the ice, snapping it by Scrivens on a 2 on 1 to give the Sens a 2 goal lead.  After a couple of ridiculously good saves by Anderson and a lucky bounce that snuck through his pads to narrow the gap to 1, Nick Foligno put the game away with his 2nd goal of the game, this one into an empty net and the Ottawa Senators ended its 5 game losing streak with a 5-2 win.

The Senators’ penalty killing was the MVP of this one.  The group killed off 5 Toronto power-plays and blocked 28 shots in total.  Craig Anderson made some timely saves in the third, while Zack Smith played another outstanding all around game.  Milan Michalek has been the Senators best all around player so far this season, but in my opinion, Zack Smith has been a close second.  The Senators next game is on Tuesday night against the Flames in Calgary.
