Senators Win 4-3 (OT) Over Panthers

Check out the highlights

Everybody knew that this Ottawa-Florida game would be a tight one and it didn’t disappoint.  Both teams had their fair share of defensive miscues, errant passes and failed clearings to keep things close.  The Senators took the lead in the first on the power-play when Chris Neil tipped an Erik Karlsson shot through Scott Clemmensen but the Panthers seemed to be dictating play.

In the second, it got a bit more interesting.  Keaton Ellerby was skating out from behind his net when he was absolutely creamed by Nick Foligno.  Ellerby would skate off under his own power, while Foligno went to the bench after a brief scrum.  What happened next was truly bizarre.  The referees conferenced together at mid-ice and determined that Foligno deserved a 5:00 minute major for charging and a game misconduct.  Foligno was absolutely stunned and the crowd became irate.  Of course, the Panthers would take advantage and score with the extra man (on a controversial skate redirection) to send the teams to the locker room tied at 1.

Cue yet another crazy period for the Ottawa Senators.  After Daniel Alfredsson (his 399th of his NHL career) & Shawn Matthias traded power-play goals, Erik Karlsson gave the Senators the lead on a wicked shot from the point with just over 10 minutes left.  But with 1:12 to play, Tomas Kopecky slid the puck underneath a sprawling Craig Anderson to tie the game once again and send it to overtime.

But despite the disappointment of losing the lead with less than 2 minutes to go, Senator fans were sent home happy.  At 2:02 of the extra period, Bobby Butler’s attempted pass across the ice deflected off Brian Campbell’s skate and slid past Scott Clemmensen to give the Senators the victory and their 3rd straight win.

Daniel Alfredsson scored a goal and 2 assists, while Chris Neil & Erik Karlsson added 2 points a piece.

The Senators hope to extend their winning streak in Carolina tomorrow night when they take on the Hurricanes.  With the Senators shorthanded in the forward department, Mike Hoffman is expected to join the team in Raleigh and suit up.

Afterwards, the talk was still about the charging call on Nick Foligno and whether or not it was warranted.  Here’s what Foligno & Coach MacLean had to say.
