Senators Lose 2-1 (OT) to Hurricanes

Check out the highlights

The Senators arrived in Raleigh during the wee hours of Friday morning and it showed early on.  The Hurricanes dominated the first 3 minutes, pressing the Senators’ defence and intercepting any attempt to clear the zone.  It eventually led to the opening goal as Andreas Nodl’s pass in front went off the skate of Matt Carkner and in to give Carolina the 1-0 lead.  The Hurricanes kept on coming and had a 5 on 3 powerplay for almost an entire 2 minutes at one point, but were unable to add to their lead thanks to Craig Anderson & the Senators penalty killers. The Canes inability to capitalize would prove costly as just before the end of the period, Filip Kuba’s shot from a horrible angle slipped by Cam Ward and tied the game for the Senators, despite being outshot 19-6.

The second and third periods seen no change on the scoreboard and no change in the pace.  The Hurricanes continued to dominate in the shot category and were up 36-21 after 3 frames.

So it was on to overtime where the team that controlled most of the play through the first 60 minutes was finally rewarded.  At 1:36 of the extra frame, Jay Harrison’s one time slap shot was slyly tipped by Tuomo Ruutu in front and the Hurricanes won their first game in overtime this season, 2-1.

The Senators win streak came to an end, but Craig Anderson did help them steal a point on the road.  Anderson made 36 saves in total, many of them difficult ones.  Kyle Turris stretched his point streak to 3 games as he added an assist on Filip Kuba’s goal.
