The “No Craig Anderson” era began Saturday night against the Northeast Division-leading Bruins.  Its safe to say that Senator fans are quite nervous about the possibility of riding an Alex Auld/Robin Lehner tandem for a long period of time, so a good performance was needed in order to put those fears to rest.

And it got off to a good start.  Much like they did against the Capitals, Jason Spezza found a streaking Erik Karlsson, who notched his 14th goal of the season and it was 1-0 Senators.  But just under 3 minutes later, Karlsson went from hero to zero as he was unable to contain Patrice Bergeron in front of his own net.   Bergeron grabbed a rebound off a Zdeno Chara shot, while Karlsson hung on from behind, and slid it by Auld to tie the game.  Things got even worse as at the 16:13 mark when Brad Marchand’s shot from just inside the blue line found its way by Auld to make it 2-1.  A bit of a weak one given up by the Sens’ backup goaltender, seemingly deflating the energy level of this Ottawa team.

The second and most of the third were a bit of a right off.  The Bruins completely smothered the Senators, intercepting passes, dominating physically and creating numerous scoring chances.  They would also add 2 more goals.  In the second, Carter Camper scored his first NHL goal when he banged in a loose puck by Auld.  The third saw David Krecji increase the lead to 3 when he scored on the power-play for his 13th goal of the season.

Time for the Cardiac Kids.  It all began when Chris Neil laid out Johnny Boychuk midway through the final frame, sending him to the locker room.  Zdeno Chara came to his teammate’s defence and challenged Neil to a fight.  Neil accepted and took Chara down quickly, pumping up the crowd.  Then, Daniel Alfredsson unleashed 2 separate slapshots from along the boards that brought the game to within 1 with just over 2 minutes remaining.  Unfortunately, it was too little, too late as the Senators were unable to score again and went on to lose to the Bruins 5-3.

The Bruins won their 8th straight game in Ottawa with the victory, while Tim Thomas improved to 9-0-0 in his last 9 games at SBP.   Despite the loss, both Jason Spezza & Erik Karlsson tallied 3 points a piece.  Daniel Alfredsson added his 21st & 22nd goals of the season.

The Senators get right back at it against the Islanders tomorrow afternoon at Scotiabank Place.
