Senators Lose 3-2 (SO) To Sabres

Check out the highlights

Senator fans were on the edge of their seats to start this one.  Would Erik Karlsson play?  Or would he sit out and allow Matt Carkner to suit up?  After both players took the warm-up, it was revealed the young Swede would indeed play and aid in the Senators’ attempt to topple the red-hot Sabres.

Canadian Anthem Screw-up

However, it was the desperate Buffalo club that came out on fire.  Shift after shift, the Sabres were on the attack, screening Ben Bishop and shooting from all angles.  At one point, Buffalo was outshooting Ottawa 8-0 and seemingly in control.

That was before the Sabres went on the power-play for the first time.  On an errant puck, Tyler Myers would jump in the air and bat down the puck.  During this action, Erik Condra stole it, catching Myers off-balance, and went in alone on Ryan Miller.  One snapshot later and the Senators had the lead on Condra’s first goal in 30 games, a shorthanded marker.

In the second, Nathan Gerbe tied the game around the midway point when his snapshot found its way by Bishop while he was screened in front.  Erik Karlsson (who banked one in off Miller’s back from behind the goal line) & Tyler Ennis (who slammed one home on a rebound of a Jordan Leopold shot) traded goals before the end of the frame and the two teams would be even going into the third.

About 7 minutes in, as the Sabres were attempting to clear their zone, Erik Karlsson intercepted a pass and bounced one in off Ryan Miller to retake the lead.  But Marcus Foligno tied it up a little later on when he beat Sergei Gonchar to the puck and deflected a centring pass off Daniel Alfredsson and over Ben Bishop’s shoulder.

An exciting overtime that went back and forth unfortunately didn’t solve a thing so it was onto the shootout.  Second shooter Jason Pominville opened the scoring on Ben Bishop to give the Sabres the advantage.  After Daniel Alfredsson tied it up going five hole on Miller, Tyler Ennis won it for Buffalo as he used his speed and his shot to fool Bishop and give the Sabres the 3-2 win.

The Senators now have 3 days before travelling to Montreal for a matchup against the Canadiens on Wednesday night.
