Senators Win 3-2 Over Capitals

If you had told me midway through the second period that the Senators were going to pull out a victory, I would have laughed directly in your face.  Other than the 4th line of Condra-Zibanejad-O’Brien & Craig Anderson, the Ottawa Senators didn’t show up until the 3rd period Tuesday night.  The Capitals dominated the first half of the game, pinning the Sens in their own zone and looking like the more energized & motivated crew.  A 2-0 lead built on goals from Troy Brouwer & Matt Hendricks had Washington firmly in front.

But just before the second period ended, Jim O’Brien, the birthday boy, deflected a pass from Erik Condra by Michael Neuvirth and all of sudden, there was a glimmer of hope.  Then, just 2:20 into the third, it was all tied up as Milan Michalek surprised Neuvirth with a backhand right off the face-off.  It was Michalek’s 2nd goal and extended his point streak to 6 games.

With the momentum clearly shifted, the Senators would not disappoint the home town fans.  At 17:30 of the third, Sergei Gonchar’s point shot on the power-play deflected off a Caps player and by Neuvirth to complete the comeback and reward the Senators with a 3-2 victory.

Craig Anderson continued to be a steady presence in net, making several key saves with the Sens down 2 and recording 31 saves.  Mika Zibanejad, making his season debut, tallied 1 assist and was named the game’s first star.
