Senators Lose 1-0 To Hurricanes

A day after learning that their 1st line centre would be out 2 months, the Ottawa Senators’ offence simply could not generate enough scoring chances in a 1-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.  All night long, the Sens were kept to the outside, forced to shoot from bad angles and long distances.  Anytime they were able to penetrate the front of the net, shots either went wide or were never even taken due to lousy puck control.  Dan Ellis may have made 33 saves and recorded his 13th career shutout, but his night wasn’t as tough as the stats would indicate.

Meanwhile, the NHL’s first star of January continued his incredible play.  Craig Anderson kept Ottawa in the game, making save after save on a pressing Hurricane team.  He recorded 34 in total, with many being of the highlight reel variety, including a point blank glove stop on Eric Staal.

Staal’s goal in the first period was his 5th of the season and extended his point streak to 4 games.  Alex Semin was named the game’s third star and was responsible for the pass that Staal deflected by Anderson.

The Senators next see action on Superbowl Sunday against the Montreal Canadiens.
