Senators Lose 2-1 to Flyers

The Senators and Flyers began the matchup at a furious pace, trading chances back and forth due to poor defending and errant passes.  However, the action was marred by, in my opinion, a blatant attempt to injure by the Flyers’ Harry Zolnierczyk. As Mike Lundin skated into the offensive zone, he committed one of the game’s No. 1 no-no’s – he went towards center ice with his head down.  Harry Zolnierczyk lined him up for what seemed like an eternity and exploded, leaving his feet and delivering a ton of force. Kaspars Daugavins immediately came to the aid of his teammate, but the damage was already done – Lundin left the game and did not return.

You be the judge…

The Flyers took over the momentum in the second.  First, red-hot Jakub Voracek skated around Eric Gryba and beat Ben Bishop along the ice to open the scoring.  Then, Wayne Simmonds was sent in alone on Bishop, going 5-hole on a beauty deke and it was 2-0 Flyers.  Philadelphia was using their speed and skill to dictate the flow of the game.

But late in the period, Marc Methot’s unscreened slapshot from the corner point somehow beat Bryzgalov clean for his 1st goal as an Ottawa Senators and it was 2-1 heading into the third.

Leave it to the Flyers, and more specifically Zac Rinaldo, to use the final frame to get underneath the Senators’ skins. Rinaldo coaxed Ottawa into a number of penalties, the most detrimental being the 5-minute major for cross-checking on Daniel Alfredsson.  Rinaldo followed through on a hit on Chris Phillips that Alfredsson took exception to, resulting in the penalty and the game misconduct.

2-1 was the final as a late game flurry around the Flyers net was unsuccessful.  The Senators simply weren’t able to match Philadelphia’s toughness and were burnt by their speed twice in the second period.

Ben Bishop was excellent once again, making 39 saves, but did have his 5-hole exposed as a weakness.

The Senators play tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm against the New York Islanders.
