Senators Win 4-3 (OT) Over Sabres

The weekend of “must points” certainly didn’t get off to a good start for the Ottawa Senators.

Buffalo scored 2 goals in the first period off the sticks of Mike Weber & Drew Stafford, both of which were created from terrible point coverage by Ottawa.  The Senators looked sluggish and were being outhustled and outskated by the quicker Sabres all frame long.

But a different Senator team came out to play in the second period.  Ryan Miller made several big saves as the Buffalo defence crumbled amidst the Ottawa pressure.

Unfortunately for Sabre fans, he couldn’t stop them all.  Patrick Wiercioch scored his 4th goal in his last 6 games to close the gap to 1.  Then, on an extremely fluky play, Chris Phillips’ point shot was redirected up and over Miller to tie the game at 2.

The Sens weren’t done.

Kyle Turris elected to take a pass from Guillaume Latendresse behind the net, banking the puck off Ryan Miller on the wraparound and giving Ottawa their first lead of the game.

Sabres tied it in third when Drew Stafford threw the puck at the net from along the boards, only to have Zack Smith tip it by Ben Bishop accidentally and it was tied once again.

So it was on to overtime and at 2:16, Christian Ehrhoff was given an interference penalty to put the Senators on the power-play.  With just 22 seconds left in the man advantage, Kyle Turris one-timed a Daniel Alfredsson pass over the shoulder of Ryan Miller and the Senators left Buffalo with 2 points & a victory.

Game notes:  Sergei Gonchar registered an assist on Patrick Wiercioch’s goal, extending his point streak to 6 games.  Kyle Turris finished the afternoon with 2 goals and 1 assist; he now has 3 goals, 2 assists in his last 3 games.
