Senators Win 4-1 Over Jets

Both the Senators and Jets came into this extremely important matchup off of extra-time victories. Winnipeg defeated the Maple Leafs 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night, while the Senators snuck by the Sabres 4-3 in overtime yesterday afternoon.

The couple of hours difference between the 2 games seemed to make a difference as the Senators were firing on all cylinders in the first.  After 20 minutes, Ottawa had outshot Winnipeg 19-6 and were up on goals by Guillaume Latendresse & Jakob Silfverberg.  Everything was going the Senators way.

The Jets performed better in the second but were unable to get anything by Robin Lehner.  Meanwhile, the Senators had numerous chances to extend the lead but failed.

It was in the third period where the game was decided.  After the Jets had narrowed the lead to 1 on a Zach Bogosian point shot, Evander Kane missed on a breakaway and Robin Lehner made a huge save on a Jets 2 on 1.

Then, at 10:49, Ron Hainsey was called for smothering the puck.  On the resulting power-play, Kyle Turris took a gorgeous pass from Daniel Alfredsson and one-timed it into the empty cage to make it 3-1 Senators. Jakob Silfverberg’s 2nd goal of the night 1:15 seconds later sealed it as Ottawa went on to the 4-1 victory.

Notes: Sergei Gonchar extended his point streak to 7 games as he assisted on Silfverberg’s PP goal. He also assisted on Turris’ 3rd period marker.

Kyle Turris now has a team leading 8 goals and has 4 goals & 2 assists in his last 4 games.
