Senators Win 3-2 (SO) Over Devils

The Ottawa Senators came into this one knowing their opposition was down their top scorer in Ilya Kovalchuk.  And while they are no stranger to missing top talent, the Senators hoped to take advantage of a wounded animal.

It started off well as shortly after an amazing shift by Turris, Alfredsson & Latendresse that resulted in numerous scoring chances, Chris Phillips launched a shot towards the net that Martin Brodeur never saw and it was 1-0 Ottawa.

The second period was a different story.  The Devils came out like gang busters  and utterly dominated the period.  New Jersey outshot Ottawa 12-4 and evened the score at the 15:13 mark when Andrei Loktionov put one into an open net.  But with just 16 seconds left in the frame, Colin Greening snapped a rebound past Brodeur off a Turris shot and despite being outplayed, the Senators were up 2-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.

New Jersey came out flying again in the third, controlling play and outshooting the Senators 9-3.  Marek Zidlicky tied the game as he outwaited Ben Bishop and beat him glove side at 6:05 of the frame.

After some back and forth in the overtime, it was on to the shootout. Daniel Alfredsson, with his first shootout goal of the season, and Travis Zajac scored within the first six so it was on to extras.  That is where Mika Zibanejad succeeded and Andrei Loktionov failed as the Senators won another close one against the Devils 3-2.

Note: Erik Condra took a puck in the face late in the third period.  He went to the locker room but returned to the bench for the shootout.

Sergei Gonchar’s 10-game point (& assist) streak came to an end.
