Gonchar’s Rights Traded to Dallas

Sergei-Gonchar-Pittsburgh-Penguins-Ottawa-Senators

The Ottawa Senators traded the rights of defenceman Sergei Gonchar to the Dallas Stars on Friday in exchange for a conditional 6th round pick in 2013.  Gonchar played 186 regular-season games with the Senators over three seasons, recording 15 goals & 76 assists.

My take: Sergei Gonchar simply didn’t fit into the Senators’ plans any longer.  The 39 year old defenceman was looking for a 2-year deal and likely wasn’t willing to take a pay cut.  With the team still in “rebuild” mode, signing an older defenceman to a longish term deal didn’t make sense, especially with all the youngsters coming up through the system (ie. Gryba, Wiercioch, Borowiecki, etc.)

Better to get something for Gonchar while you still could, rather than to let him walk away for free.  Another shrewd move by Bryan Murray as he continues to build assets for the club.

UPDATE:  According to reports, Gonchar & the Dallas Stars have come to agreement on a 2-year/$10 million deal.
