Free Agent Frenzy – Ottawa Senators

I’m not going to gush on about how losing Daniel Alfredsson has devastated the Senators and the entire city of Ottawa.  Because it has.

Am I surprised?  Heck, yes. Do I blame him? Not really.  What I do question is his motivation…he apparently thinks the Red Wings have a better chance at winning the Cup then the Senators do next season.  Is that true?  Some would argue.

He calls it a selfish choice, but he’s entitled.  He’s a 17-year veteran who has done nothing but good things for his team and his community.

Daniel Alfredsson is a Detroit Red Wing.  Crazy.

In the meantime, Bryan Murray pulled off a trade that has been talked about for awhile – a 3 for 1 swap that saw Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen & their 2014 1st round pick sent to the Anaheim Ducks for prolific scorer Bobby Ryan.  Many forget that Ryan went second overall behind Sidney Crosby in their respective draft and is a proven scorer in the NHL, an attribute the Senators were lacking.  Ryan will likely line up beside Jason Spezza on the first line and will be counted on for some offensive punch.

Did the Sens give up too much?  I don’t think so.  You gotta give up something to get something.  Silfverberg & Noesen will be good, if not great, NHLers.  But if the Sens finish in the same place or higher next season, the 1st round pick won’t be in the top 15.  Ryan’s abilities were well worth it.

Here’s a list of Ottawa Senator happenings over the course of the day.

Clarke MacArthur signed with the Senators for 2 years/$6.5 million.

Senators trade F Jakob Silfverberg, F Stefan Noesen & 2014 1st round pick to Anaheim Ducks for F Bobby Ryan.

Daniel Alfredsson signed with the Detroit Red Wings for 1-year/$5.5 million.

Andre Benoit signed with the Colorado Avalanche for 1-year/$900,000

Peter Regin signed with the New York Islanders for 1-year/$750,ooo.
