Senators Win 1-0 Over Sabres

In what could possibly be described as one of the most entertaining 1-0 games in the history of the NHL, the Ottawa Senators defeated the Buffalo Sabres to open their 2013-14 season.  The action was end to end for the entire 60 minutes, but Craig Anderson & Ryan Miller refused to let anything by them.  It took a cross-ice feed from Clarke MacArthur to Erik Karlsson with 1:35 left in the third period to decide the winner – breaking the hearts of the Sabre faithful and elating those walking along the Sens Mile.

Thoughts from the game:

1. Top line is forming some chemistry – as the game went along, Spezza/Ryan/Michalek began controlling more and more of the play when they were on the ice.  If not for Miller, they would have at least 1 goal to their names.

2. Eric Gryba will not play Saturday night – Gryba continued to make the mistakes he was making last season – pinching at the wrong times and giving the puck away right in front of his own net.  I would be surprised if Joe Corvo doesn’t play against the Leafs.

3. Craig Anderson is already in mid-season form – a 35 save, 1-0 shutout in the team’s season opener says it all.

4. Any concerns about Erik Karlsson’s recovery should be forgotten.  Karlsson played 25:59 and looked like the Karlsson of old.  He skated like the wind and used his speed on offence AND defence.  Not to mention, he scored the game-winner.  Chalk up another Norris trophy right now.

5. This team will score more goals than last season.  Yes, they only scored once.  But the Senators generated a lot of scoring chances.  As the season goes on, there shots will become more accurate.  There are offensive weapons on all 4 lines and on the back end – goals will come.
