Senators Win 4-1 Over Blue Jackets

The Senators came into this one with a desperate need to win a game.  Losing 5 straight – the past 2 in shootouts – has put the fan base in a terrible panic.  Ottawa is outside of the playoff picture and a failure to live up to all the lofty expectations  would be devastating for the nation’s capital.

Luckily, the team got off to a great start.  Not only did Robin Lehner stand on his head during multiple penalty kills, Erik Karlsson & Clarke MacArthur staked the Senators to a 2-0 first period lead.  Karlsson’s goal extended the star defenceman’s point streak to 5 games (3 goals, 5 assists), while MacArthur was the recipient of a beautiful pass by Bobby Ryan from behind the net.

Lehner took it the rest of the way.  Despite giving up a power-play goal early in the third, the Swedish netminder made XX saves and looked extremely confident in doing so.  Columbus had several chances throughout the game but Lehner was able to make the big save when he needed to.

1. Erik Karlsson – Karlsson likely played his best game of the season.  2 goals and was flying like the wind all night.

2. Team toughness – Any coincidence that the Senators snapped their 5 game losing streak while receiving 4 fighting majors? I don’t think so.  The team plays with more confidence and tenacity when its on edge.
