Senators PreGame Dec 19

The questions continued to swirl Thursday morning as the Senators took to the ice for pregame skate.  The entire leadership group was missing from what they were calling an “optional” practice.  15 skaters decided to participate including Methot, Corvo, Gryba, Weircioch, Ceci, Anderson, Lehner, Zibanejad, Conacher, Ryan, Neil, Kassian, Condra, Pageau & Greening.  Coach MacLean was not on the ice.

During media availability, a number of Senators spoke on what went down last night and this morning.  Here are a few of the quotes via Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun.

“Pulling out all the expletives: ‘Wake up … wake up and show up,” said winger Bobby Ryan.
“I think what I took most out of it was that we can be the most maddening team (Murray) has ever seen. We show up and play a great 64 minutes against St. Louis and then play zero against a team like New Jersey.”

“We don’t play good enough, we don’t play hard enough, we don’t play long enough,” said MacLean Thursday morning. “That’s been going on since the first day. That hasn’t changed.

“We’re still saying the same thing. We haven’t got consistent work ethic, structure and leadership in our group since Day 1. We still don’t have it,” said MacLean.

“Whenever you’re not winning you start looking at the top down,” said Spezza. “Being captain, it gets reflected on me first and I have to find a way our group more consistent and my own game more consistent.”

MacLean also confirmed Craig Anderson as his starter.  Marc Methot, who sat out last game as a healthy scratch and Matt Kassian are in, Patrick Wiercioch & Cory Conacher are out.

The importance of tonight’s performance has now increased 10 fold.  How the team responds will be quite interesting.
